Theta Lambda Omega Chapter was chartered in 1966 in Pontiac, Michigan. It was the first African-American Women’s Greek-letter organization initiated in the Pontiac area.
The energetic young educator, Cornelia Jackson had a vision to help the citizens in the community of Pontiac. Therefore, she along with several other women organized an interest group known as the “AKITVATORS.” They became involved in community events and service projects including adopting the Golden Age senior group, providing Thanksgiving baskets, a Toys for Tots project and sponsoring a gospel concert featuring the Bell Chorale. With the cooperation and support of Eta Iota Omega Chapter, Inkster, Michigan, Theta Lambda Omega soon received its charter.
The chartering members were: Beatrice Ringgold, Carolyn Wheeler, Cecile Donegan, Clydell Jones, Cornelia Jackson, Daisy Payne, Elois Skeen, Eloise Young, Evergrace Seay, Fannie Brownlee, Frostin Watson, Janice Hatchett Cowan, Joan Vaughn Walker, Joyce Tucker, LeBertha Johnson, Lucille Northcross and Priscilla Byas.
Through the years, Theta Lambda Omega has initiated and maintained many activities contributing to the advancement of the Pontiac community. Among them and the longest-running activity is the Chapter’s annual Debutante Scholarship Cotillion. Introduced and spearheaded by Mary Lynn Yvonne Ferguson in 1974, it continues to be the largest affair of its kind in the State of Michigan. Over the past four decades, the cotillion has assisted hundreds of college-bound, high school graduates in their efforts to secure higher education, participate in cultural and educational enrichment activities, while serving the surrounding community. To date, over $1,900,000.00 in scholarships has been awarded.
The Chapter has formed, mentored and provided service to various groups of all ages. From tutoring of elementary school students, to the current Emerging Young Leader International Initiative (young girls grades 6-8), to the ongoing AKA Teens (9-12th grade) – our investment in the next generation of leaders is evident. The AKA Teens program compliments participants’ formal education, provides enrichment activities, and builds confidence and leadership skills.
Theta Lambda Omega strives to serve all mankind through a number of annual community service projects, as well as cultural, educational, health and economic workshops. The women of Theta Lambda Omega are meeting the goals of its great national organization through the 2010-2014 GLOBAL LEADERSHIP THROUGH TIMELESS SERVICE program initiatives.
Proud of our accomplishments , we will continue to provide service to all mankind and make our presence known to the citizens of Pontiac, Michigan.
